BURNED CARAMEL
The Importance of Diversity in Fashion – OR the Rise of Brown and Nougat Shades.

Diversity in the fashion industry is often spoken about as something important from an outward perspective – with much of the conversation focused on diversifying catwalks and in ad campaigns. While this is incredibly important, diversity in design is imperative for businesses wanting to succeed into the future.

In the US, non-Hispanic whites will not make up the majority of the US population by 2055. Non-Hispanic whites are projected to become less than half of the US population by 2055 and 46% by 2065. Retailers are increasingly serving a global, rather than a national or regional audience, and the discussion about ‘Nude’ as a colour concept is more and more questioned.

This diversity discussion will reposition brown shades, reflecting the beauty of darker skin tones. These tones, once considered ‘mumsy’ and too conservative to be fashion, are once again en vogue. As a result, colour shades like caramel, amber, brown or nougat are becoming increasingly popular and we will find that there will be no escape from these darker brown tones in the future A/W 2018-19 seasons.
